Life
If you give up your life - or any part of it - for the sake of Christ, He always finds ways to give it back to you.

"...I have come that they might have life, and that they have it more abundantly." (John 10:10)

Higher Ground

"Lord lift me up, and let me stand, on Heaven's table land.
A higher plain than I have found, Lord lift me up on higher ground"

July 1, 2010
Today's journey, although not to be compared to heaven, reminded me of that favorite hymn. It certainly took us to some inspiring heights as we drove the scenic "Highway of Legends", route 12 in southeastern Colorado, through the snow-capped Spanish Peaks area of the San Isabel National forest.

We stayed at Bear Lake National Forest Campground at 10,500 ft. elevation.

Bear Lake has its own legend.

Our campsite beside a rushing mountain stream.

Bear Lake after a brief rainstorm....popular with fishermen.

Joselyn fording the stream

Time to don jeans and jackets as we set off on a hike to even higher ground.

Roe says. "Where's the oxygen?"

Joselyn and me, resting on a log. The trail went on up, but we decided we were high enough.

Joselyn starts down.

Bear scat....didn't see the bear, although the campground hosts came around to warn us to put all foodstuff inside at night.

Cool enough for our first campfire. I have to report that Sarah's (bluepinecones) orange-peel fire starter is still a dud 6 months after the January get-together in Ocala.

But with commercial fire starter and some collected kindling and cones, we did get one started.

Grilled hamburgers

and toasted marshmallows

Joselyn works the hand pump to get some water. We took turns....it was,'t easy. The water was ice-cold.

Joselyn and I sat outside and played a card game, but I had to put Roe to bed....he just couldn't hold his head up any more, and besides, the ground was cold.

View from the campground.

Morning walk....looking back at our campsite

The road back down to Hwy 12.

Highway 12

A single point of interest on our brief trip on Interstate 25 toward Colorado Springs. That volcanic formation was used as a landmark for early travelers.

We got off that busy highway as soon as we could and back to scenic by-ways. Next post will be our drive to the top of Pike's Peak....even higher ground at over 14,000 ft.

  1. beautiful pictures liz, we had a water pump
just like that one up at our cabin. The water
was 99% pure (tested) but we had to pump awhile
to get the rust cleared out before the clean water came though, it definitley is hard work
and we made the kids take turns pumping.
Don't overdo at high altitude, take your time
acclimating so you don't get high altitude bends.
